Social Media Monitoring Weekly Roundup.

by Nigel Filed under: Uncategorized

This is the first of our weekly roundups of posts about social media monitoring.  Due to some technical problems in getting the feeds started, it will be incomplete, but I hope that it will give you a flavour of what is to come.

Washington Times – Inside the Beltway (column) – commented on FBI and Department of Homeland Security plans to monitor social media.

Free Pint – Buyers Guide on Social Media Monitoring (register for PDF sent by email) – while the title suggests this is guide to social media monitoring, the only monitoring tools mentioned (Radian6 and Meltwater Buzz) are in a “see also” side box.  The other tools listed are for traditional media monitoring. Articles are pretty basic stuff.

The Domain Info – Online media monitoring –a list of online media monitoring websites, in multiple languages.  Again, this is a listing of traditional media monitoring tools.

KANA – Measure the effectiveness of Social Media Monitoring – KANA produce a suite of tools for Service Experience Management, and social media monitoring is a part of this.  They will be holding a webinar on the 23rd of February at 19:30 GMT; click the link to register.

Prison Planet – Why the rush for FEDs to Monitor social media? – this was just one of many articles about the Department of Homeland Security and FBI announcing that they will be monitoring social media, which included a YouTube video of the opening address from Rep. Patrick Meehan at the opening of a Copngressional Hearing into the issue. The use of social media in law enforcement is becoming mainstream (see the Social media in policing LinkedIn group), and it seems logical that this should be accompanied by monitoring activity.  There are, however, perceived issues of privacy and legality when this is carried out by state bodies, though the fact that monitored posts are publicly available suggests to me that this issue will quickly disappear.

From next week, the weekly roundup will include more posts and links, and hopefully become more useful to you. Please comment below on any of the issues raised.
